OCHS CTI Students Compete at State Leadership Conference

Nine Oglethorpe County High School Career &Technical Instruction (CTI) Students participated in the 31st annual CTI State Leadership Conference held at Rock Eagle on April 26th – 28th, 2012. Over 400 students from across the state attended and competed at this year’s conference.  An OCHS three man team competed in Occupational Creative Thinking (OCT). The team members were Sam Demsky, Josh Woods and Matt Yoder.  They made it to the second round and finished in the top eight out of twenty school teams entered in this event. They each received a medal for their accomplishment.      Kelby Andrews competed in Public Speaking and Hope West competed in Community Civic Awareness.  Both received honorable mention and a medal for completion of the events as well.  Also, four students received certificates in Leadership.  Those students were: Seniors, Cody Borders and Austin Hansford, Junior, Patricia Phair and Freshman, Ashley Smith.  Mrs. Bright, CTI Coordinator, is very proud of her students’ accomplishments as well as professionalism during the event and is looking forward to another round of competition next year.

Congratulations to the 2010 boys' Golf Team

The Boys Golf Team qualified for the state tournament for the first time in school history in the 8AA Region Championship held at Traditions Golf course in Braselton on Tuesday April 23rd. The Boys’ posted a team score of 227. This score enabled them to place second out of sixteen teams. The top two teams go to the state tournament which will be held at Waynesboro Country Club on May7th.The top 4 individual scores were as follows:

  • Nathan Mallonee shot=74
  • Jake O’Bryan shot = 79
  • Jim Beatty shot = 83
  • Kory Lott shot =91

Conditions were less than ideal with winds hovering around 30 to 40 mph and temperatures in the low 60’s.

Overall, the team posted some outstanding scores throughout the season. Junior Nathan Mallonee was the best and most consistent performer throughout the season. Nathan posted a best 9 hole score of 32 and shot a 74 in the Region Championship at Traditions Golf Course. Nathan placed second in the region championship.

Junior Jake O’Bryan also had an outstanding season and posted a low 9 hole score of 35.Jake also posted some low tournament scores at Achasta (74) and at Rocky Neck G.C. (76). Jake shot a 79 in the region championship. Conditions were so bad that day that only four golfers broke 80 at the Traditions Golf Course.

Junior Jim Beatty also performed well for the Patriots. Jim posted a low 9 hole score of 34 and a low 18 hole tournament score of 81.Jim posted a score of 39 on the front nine of the region tournament and came in with a final score of 83.

Kory Lott is one of two seniors on the golf team. Kory posted a low 9 hole score of 42 versus Oconee at Athens Country Club and was one of the main reasons the Patriots beat the Warriors fairly easily that day. Kory shot a 91 at the Region Championship.

Sophomore Ben Giles who participated in competitive golf for the first time improved tremendously as the season progressed. Although Ben’s score did not count in the region championship he was an important member of the team. In some of the dual 9 hole matches Ben’s score was the fourth best score for Oglethorpe County High School. Just recently Ben posted a 9 hole score of 46. Ben worked extremely hard on his golf game throughout the season.

Jonah Ingram was the other senior on the golf team. Jonah participated in all the 5 dual matches and 4 tournaments for the 2012 Patriot golf team. Jonah kept the players lose on the golf team with his interesting stories and kept his teammates always looking forward to see how low he would score.

The team is coached by Dr. Ed Rock. Rock is also a school counselor at Oglethorpe County High School. Rick Mallonee also helped coached the boys team.

A great season and the OCHS players are looking forward to the State Tournament on May 7th at Waynesboro County Club. Best of luck to the Patriot golfers as they try and win a State Championship for the Patriots.
