Oglethorpe County High School is excited to announce Dayon Toomer as the new Head Varsity Boys Basketball Coach!
Coach D. Toomer is a dedicated educator and coach with strong roots in Macon, Georgia. A graduate of Jones County High School, he developed his passion for athletics, leadership, and mentorship at an early age—values that continue to guide his work today.
Coach Toomer earned his Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University, his Master’s degree from Troy University, and his Specialist degree from Valdosta State University. His educational background reflects his commitment to growth and excellence in both the classroom and athletics.
He is currently entering his 16th year as an educator and his 19th year overall in coaching. Coach Toomer is certified in Health & Physical Education and Special Education General Curriculum, allowing him to impact students across multiple areas of development.
Throughout his career, Coach Toomer has been part of several successful programs. As an assistant, he helped lead Swainsboro High School to a Region Championship and Final Four appearance in basketball in 2015, and was part of a State Championship appearance in football at McIntosh County Academy in 2016. While serving as the head coach at Bacon County, he led the team to three playoff appearances in four seasons and helped the program achieve its first two double-digit-win seasons since 2016.
Coach Toomer has also made a strong impact on individual athlete development. He has coached two 1,000-point scorers in basketball and helped develop region champions in track and field, including a Girls’ Long Jump champion and a Boys’ 3200-meter champion in 2022. Earlier in his career, he served as a student assistant coach at Georgia Southern University during the 2008 season.
He believes coaching is an extension of teaching, using athletics as a platform to build discipline, accountability, leadership, and perseverance in student-athletes. His focus goes beyond wins and losses, emphasizing growth, character, and preparation for life after sports.
Coach Toomer is engaged to Antorya, and together they have four children: Chassity, Mason, Carson, and Cionni.
Additionally, Coach Toomer will be on campus tomorrow to meet with prospective basketball students for his team. The high school will make an announcement for students interested in meeting with Coach Toomer at some point during the day.
Please join us in welcoming Coach Toomer to the Oglethorpe County family!
