We are starting a new feature that will allow us to “spotlight” students and staff for outstanding achievements. Our OCHS Yearbook Class, under the direction of Mr. Maurice Freeman, will be assisting with this. If you have a student or staff member who you believe deserves to be in the “spotlight”, please send us a brief email with the information. These can be sent to blevine@oglethorpe.k12.ga.us and rames@oglethorpe.k12.ga.us. Our journalism students will then be interviewing the candidates to create the post.
Please help us congratulate our first teacher in the spotlight – Dr. DeShonda Wolfe!

The high school and central office will lose power for about 20 minutes. This is to try and fix the transformer issue. Thank you for your patience.

Good morning! The storm that came through last night has knocked out phones and Internet at the high school and central office. We also have limited AC. Georgia Power is working to get this restored. You can send messages through Rooms and the website. We will use phones to check these. We will keep you updated when full service has been restored!

NEW CONSEQUENCES FOR VAPES
Even though school has just started back, vapes have continued to be a major issue. In an attempt to prevent the amount of time it takes our administrators to deal with vapes daily, we will be instituting new procedures.

If a student is caught in possession of a vape, or having used one during the school day or at school-sponsored events, a juvenile complaint will be filed with the possibility of the following consequences (which are at the discretion of the prosecutor and are out of our control):

1. The student and parent/guardian will have to meet with the prosecutor.
2. Parents will face a fine ($75).
3. The student will be required to complete community service.
4. The student will be required to take a class on the dangers of vaping.

If there is a second offense, the student will go to juvenile court to face the judge.

Please talk to your child about vaping, the dangers of vaping, and the changes that are being implemented. We do not want to see any of our students in trouble with the law. A note for parents – juvenile court is extremely time consuming. It is held on a rotating basis between Elbert County, Madison County, and Oglethorpe County, and can take most of the day!

We will once again partner with Cancer Pathways, a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide pathways of support, education, and community to anyone facing cancer – whether it’s before, during, or after a cancer experience. Because vaping is in the same category as cigarette smoking and has now been linked to serious health risks, cessation programs are now included in the services offered by Cancer Pathways.

If any parent or student feels as if they have an addiction or need help to stop vaping and would like to voluntarily seek help, please email blevine@oglethorpe.k12.ga.us and we can put you in touch with the organizer of the class.

Please be aware that bus 20-2 will be very late (at least 45 minutes) due to flooding on the route. Many other buses will be running late due to dirt roads flooding and lots of standing water.

We had a great first day except for traffic! We know this will ease after a few days, but please know we are working on an amended plan to address the volume of cars particularly at the elementary school. Our buses were late because they could not get through the traffic. Our drivers did an AMAZING job making sure every kid got home safely, although we do know the kids were hot, tired, and sweaty! Thank you to our transportation department and our drivers for staying in such great contact, so that we were able to let parents know where their kiddos were! Thank you to the many parents who showed patience and grace to our staff who were outside for hours trying to deal with the traffic!
