Congratulations to the middle school who was recognized last Thursday with a visit from State School Superintendent Richard Woods to present the school with the Math Leader Award. This award was presented to the middle school for their outstanding results on the Enhanced Algebra: Concepts and Connections 2023-24 End of Course Test. The Enhanced Algebra course was implemented for the first time in 8th grade last year, and recommended students took the course with teacher, Sandy Cederbaum, for high school credit. The students who took the course last year, now 9th grade students, were allowed to return to the middle school to receive their award. Just as state championship athletic teams get a police escort, the math students also received a police escort to the middle school for their meeting with the state school superintendent, and this outstanding math achievement! 💙❤️ All photo credits to Maurice Freeman!

Earlier this week, several FCCLA members attended the State Leadership Conference in Columbus, GA where they participated in informational workshops, explored the college and career expo, and were involved in a variety of competitions. Congratulations to all of our competitors for the hard work and dedication they put in outside the classroom to prepare for these competitions. Molly Graham earned 3rd place inn Creed Speaking. And Ana Vu won first place in her state competition: Toys That Teach. Again, we are proud of and want to congratulate these students for representing OCMS so well this week.

OCMS is currently in a lock-down practice drill. All students and staff are safe–they are just taking the necessary steps to test our new safety system and procedures. At this time, OCMS students can not check-in or check-out. We will notify parents as soon as the lock-down drill is over. Beverley Levine

Our ELL classes celebrated International Food Day.  Each student prepared and brought in a food item that represented their home country.  We enjoyed a variety of delicious foods like tamales, pupusas, fried rice, gorditas, spring rolls, pound cake, conchas, frutas con crema, and much more. Thank you to the parents for your support in supplying the food.

Our 8th grade Careers and Leadership class has been talking about the importance of being a good leader and working together as a team. This week, they practiced these skills in this cup stacking activity. During several rounds of this activity, they had guidelines to follow like no talking, only the leader could talk, everyone communicating, and coming up with their own strategy. Some groups were more successful than others. During the reflection time, students agreed that it is important to have good leadership qualities and have good communication skills.

Mrs. Blackwell's 8th grade Science class engaged in an electricity lab where they created series and parallel circuits and electromagnets. The students had to focus on the path of current to ensure that the circuits would work properly. I think we have some future electricians here.
